Checks and Balances

Great peace have they who love Your law.

(Psalm 119:165)

I have written several times in this devotional about the fact that god sometimes leads us through circumstances. This is certainly true, but we must be balanced as we seek to hear and obey His voice through circumstances. I do not recommend using circumstances alone to discern God's will. We should also consider peace and wisdom, which I have also addressed in this book. These are major ways in which we hear from God, and we should never ignore them. A circumstance might look like an open door, but we should not go through the door unless we have peace.

Following circumstances alone can get us into real trouble. Satan can arrange circumstances as well as God can, because he has access to the natural realm in which we live. Therefore, if we follow circumstances alone, without considering other ways we hear from God, we can fall into deception.

We know we cannot go against God's Word. We must be led by peace and walk in wisdom. It is easy to do a quick "inner check" to test the level of peace in our hearts before allowing circumstances to lead us. The safest way to hear from God is to combine biblical methods of being led by the Spirit and allow them to serve as checks and balances for one another. It is always best to consider the whole counsel of God's Word and never merely try to find portions of it that agree with what you would like.

GOD'S WORD FOR YOU TODAY: Always follow peace when making a decisions.

Life Point

Thus says the Lord, you Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I am the Lord your God, Who teaches you to profit, Who leads you in the way that you should go.

(Isaiah 48:17)

God has an individual plan for each person. If you will go to Him and submit to Him, He will come into your heart and commune with you. He will teach you and guide you in the way you should go. Do not try to be someone else. Do not try to do what someone else does. Just allow the Lord to show you how to fellowship with Him. Then follow Him step-by-step as He directs your life.

God's good plan

Your eyes saw my unformed substance, and in Your book all the days [of my life] were written before ever they took shape, when as yet there was none of them.

(Psalm 139:16)

God's plan for our lives has been established in the spiritual realm since before the foundation of the earth, and it is a good plan, as we see in Jeremiah 29:11; "For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in you final outcome.

Psalm 139:16 tell us that before we were even born, God had planned our days. However, Satan has worked hard to destroy the Lord's good plan in many of us, and he has had a high success rate.

God sent His Son, Jesus, to redeem us and to restore all things to proper order. He has written down His will for our lives, and as we believe it and confess it, it literally begins to become reality.

Some people believe for a great number of things but see very little manifestation of them. Perhaps the reason is because they are believing but not speaking. They may see some results of their faith, but not the radical results they would experience if they would bring their mouths along with their hearts into God's service (Romans 10:9, 10).

Some people are trying to live in the blessings of the Lord while still talking like the devil. We must not make that mistake. We will not see positive results in our daily lives if we speak negative things. We should remember that what we are speaking, we are calling for. We are reaching into the spiritual realm and drawing out something according to our words. We can reach into Satan's realm, the realm of curses, and draw out evil, negative things, or we can reach into God's realm, the realm of blessings, and draw out good, positive things. Words are like containers; they carry creative or destructive power.

The choice is up to us.

Stay Safe in the Word

Test and prove all things [until you can recognize] what is good; [to that] hold fast.

(1 Thessalonians 5:21)

Hearing from God clearly and avoiding the possibility of deception comes only from spending regular time with Him, learning His Word. Listening for God's voice without having knowledge of His Word is a mistake. Knowing God's written Word protects us from deception.

Trying to hear from God without knowing His Word is irresponsible, and even dangerous. People who want to be led by the Spirit but are too lazy to spend time in the Word and in prayer set themselves up for deception because evil spirits are eager to whisper to listening ears. The devil tried to say things to Jesus and He always replied, "It is written, and then quoted Scripture to refute the lies of the enemy (see Luke 4).

Some people seek God only when they are in trouble and need help. But if they are not used to hearing from God, they will find recognizing His voice difficult when they really need Him.

We need to compare any idea, prompting, or thought that comes to us with God's Word. If we don't know the Word, we won't have anything against which to measure theories and arguments that rise up in our thoughts. The enemy can present wild ideas that make sense to us. The fact that thoughts are logical doesn't mean they are from God. We may like what we hear, but the fact that something appeals to us doesn't mean it is from God. We may hear something that feels good to our emotions, but if it fails to give us peace it is not from God. God's advice to us is to always follow peace and let it be an umpire in our lives (see Colossians 3:15).

GOD'S WORD FOR YOU TODAY: Test everything you hear against the Word of God, because that is the only standard of truth that exists.

A Lamp and a Light

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

(Psalm 119:105)

There is nothing more supernatural than the Word of God, which is given to us by divine inspiration of the Holy Spirit speaking through His prophets and disciples. The Bible has an answer for every question we might ever have. The Word of God is full of life principles, true stories of God's mercy toward human behavior, and rich parables filled with important truths for every person on Earth.

The Bible is a personal letter to you and me. It tells us everything we need to know. There may be times when God speaks something to us that is not in a specific chapter or verse, but if He is truly speaking, then what we hear will always be in agreement with His Word. God will speak to us and lead us in every situation as we seek Him through His Word. When I need to hear from God about something specific, He frequently reminds me of a Scripture that clearly gives me the answer I am seeking.

Hearing God's voice (being led by the Holy Spirit) throughout each day has become a natural way of life for me since I received the fullness of the Holy Spirit. God gives the gift of His Spirit to everyone who asks (see Luke 11:13), and the Holy Spirit helps us understand God's Word so we can apply its wisdom to our lives.

GOD'S WORD FOR YOU TODAY:  Read God's Word as a personal letter, written just for you.

God's Words Agree with His Word

Your word have I laid up in my heart, that I might not sin against You.

(Psalm 119:11)

I once sat down to do some writing on a book and sensed the Lord saying. "Take a few minutes and just wait on Me." I waited for a very short time and then started to make a phone call. The Lord gently said, "I didn't tell you to make phone calls; I told you to wait on Me." My desire to do something was not unusual; most people have a hard time being still and waiting on someone, something, or even God.

After I got quit and waited for a period of time, the Lord began to speak to me about angels-something I certainly was not expecting. He led me to look up several Scriptures and I ended up having a mini-Bible study on the power and presence of angels. God has reasons for everything He does, and I believe He wanted me to be more aware of the angels working on my behalf-something I had not thought about for a long, long time.

You may wonder how I knew with certainty that God was speaking to me and that the whole subject of angels was not something I can up with in my own mind. The answer is that I had peace about what I heard. It felt "right" inside of me. My spirit confirmed it as a message from the Lord, and what I heard agreed with God's Word.

There have been other times I have waited on God and heard a similar voice, but knew intuitively that it was not God's. We must know God through His Word in order to safely know when He is speaking to us and when He isn't.

GOD'S WORD FOR YOU TODAY: Study God's Word so you can recognize His voice.
