Be Filled at All Times
Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but ever be filled and stimulated with the [Holy] Spirit.
(Ephesians 5:18)
It is important for you to know that you are instructed in God's Word to "ever be filled" with the Spirit-that is, to be filled at all times.
To do that, it is necessary to give Him first place in our lives. Often this requires discipline, because many other things demand our time and attention. There are many things we want and need, but nothing is more important than God. Seeking God daily through His Word and spending time with Him is the key to staying filled with His presence. An Attitude of gratitude is also very helpful, as is guarding our thoughts carefully.
The Holy Spirit never goes away; once He takes up occupancy, He settles in and refuses to leave. But it is important that we keep ourselves stirred up in spiritual things. Anything that is hot can grow cold if the fire goes out.
I went through a six-month period of time when God forbade me to ask for anything except more of Him. It was a great discipline in drawing near to Him on a deeper level of intimacy than I had known before. I would start to say, "God, I need _____," then I would stop myself as I remembered His instruction to me. I would finish my sentence with, "more of You."
God gives us everything we need; and He knows what we need before we ask for it. If we delight ourselves in Him and hunger for Him, He will also give us our hearts' desires. I encourage you, today and every day, to keep yourself filled with the Holy Spirit and to want more of God than anything else. He'll take care of the rest.
God's WORD FOR YOU TODAY: Be sure you're always "filled up" with the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 5:18-20 is such a powerful passage! How can we obey it and stay ever filled with the Holy Spirit? We can do it by speaking to ourselves (through our thoughts) or to others (through our words) in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. We need to keep our thoughts and words full of God's Word by continuously offering praise and giving thanks to Him.

Just Give It Time
Show me now Your way, that I may know You [progressively become more deeply and intimately acquainted with You].
(Exodus 33:13)
When you spend time with God, it becomes evident. You become calmer, you're easier to get along with, you are more joyful, and you remain stable in every situation. Spending quality time with God is an investment that yields rich benefits. You begin to understand what He likes and what offends Him. As with any friend, the more time you spend with God, the more like Him you become.
Spending time with God causes you to become more sensitive to the love He wants to demonstrate to you and to others. Your conscience alerts you when you're talking to someone in a way that does not please Him. Your heart grieves when He grieves, and you quickly pray, "Oh, God, I'm sorry." You soon want to apologize to the person you have offended and discover that saying, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you," isn't so difficult after all.
When God told Moses he had found favor in His eves (see Exodus 33:12), Moses understood that God was telling him he could ask for anything his heart desired.
Moses responded by saying that he simply wanted to become more intimately acquainted with God. Moses had seen God perform history's most magnificent miracles, yet what he wanted most of all was to know God intimately.
I pray that knowing God is the desire of your heart. You can know Him and hear His voice as clearly and as intimately as you want to. All it takes is spending time with Him.
GOD'S WORD FOR YOU TODAY: God does not have favorites, but He does have confidantes.

Putting the Word to Work
Do you ever struggle with how to pray or what to pray for? Your are not alone-even the disciples needed to learn how to pray (see Luke 11:1-4)! Although there is no one "right way" to pray, the prayer that Jesus taught His disciples is an excellent model.
Worship, intercession, repentance, surrender, praise, and petition are all important elements of prayer. Even as the disciples did, ask God to teach you about these different aspects of prayer and be sure to SPEND TIME WITH HIM (GOD) IN PRAY. DAILY.

Like a Child
Truly I say to you, whoever does not accept and receive and welcome the kingdom of God like a little child [does] shall not in any way enter it [at all].
(Luke 18:17)
God hears the simplest, faintest cry and receives the most childlike requests. I have raised four children and I now have nine grandchildren-and I can tell you that one thing children are not is complicated, Children have not trouble letting you know what they want, running into your arms when they are afraid, or giving you big generous kiss, sometimes for no apparent reason. When they ask their parents a question, they fully expect to get an answer and we should have the same expectation when we talk to God. Children are not sophisticated enough to hide their hearts or feelings very well and as a result, communicating with them can be easy and refreshing.
That's the way God wants us to be when we talk to Him. We need to approach God with childlike simplicity and wait, eager to hear what He has to say to us. Just as children are naturally inclined to trust their parents completely, we also need to be innocent, pure, and free from doubt as we trust God's voice. When we pray with simple, childlike faith, we can experience God's miracle-working power and see things change.
GOD'S WORD FOR YOU TODAY: When you pray today, call God "Daddy" and confide in Him completely.

Seek the "One Thing"
One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek, inquire for, and [insistently] require: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord [in His presence] all the days of my life, to behold and gaze upon the beauty [the sweet attractiveness and the delightful loveliness] of the Lord and to meditate, consider, and inquire in His temple. {Ps. 16:11; 18:6; 65:4; Luke 2:37.]
(Psalm 27:4)
If you could ask for only one thing, what would it be? in Psalm 27:4, David said there was only one thing that he sought after-to dwell in God's presence. More than anything else, David wanted to know God, to see God as He really is and to be with Him. Truly, to know God is the highest calling we have.
Unfortunately, we can get so distracted with the busy details of our lives that we neglect the most important thing-spending time with God. Luke 10:38-42 illustrates this point well as it relates the story of busy Martha. When Jesus visited her home, she became preoccupied with serving, but her sister Mary stopped all work and sat at His feet. Jesus told Martha that only one thing was really important, and Mary had chosen it. Mary had decided she was not going to miss the opportunity to visit with the Master. I suppose Martha intended to work Jesus into her schedule somewhere, but Mary was willing to stop what she was doing and work her schedule around Him.
How foolish we are to spend our lives seeking those things that cannot satisfy while we ignore God, the "One Thing" Who can give us great joy, peace, satisfaction, and contentment. The world is filled with empty people who are trying to satisfy the void in their lives with the latest-model car, a promotion at work, a human relationship, a vacation, or some other thing. Their efforts to find fulfillment in those things never work. I t is sad that so many people waste their entire lives and never realize it. They never know the joy of seeking the "One Thing" they really need. Each one of us has a God-shaped hole inside, and nothing can fill it except God Himself. No matter what else we try to fill it with, we will remain empty and frustrated.
If God is on your list of things to seek, but not at the top, I encourage you to move everything around and put it all after Him. If you will put Him first in everything you do, you will be so blessed. Investing your life in God is the very best thing you can do.

With God, Nothing Is Wasted
Gather up now the fragments (the broken pieces that are left over), so that nothing may be lost and wasted.
(-John 6:12)
No experience in you life is ever wasted or in vain if you give all your cares to the Lord. Even if your fragmented life looks like an abandoned battlefield, Jesus can reshape all the pieces of your past into something beautiful.
After Jesus had fed five thousand people with just a few loaves of bread and two small fish, He told His disciples, "Gather up now the fragments (the broken pieces that are left over), so that nothing may be lost and wasted." (John 6:12) The disciples gathered up twelve baskets of food from the leftovers, still much more than the small offering of loaves and fishes that was made to Jesus in the first place.
God set me free from fear, insecurity, emotional addictions, and the bondage of a deep-rooted sense of rejection. Then He reshaped my fragmented life and gave me the glorious privilege of teaching His people how they can be whole; how they can have fruitful, happy lives and ministries; and how they can enjoy healthy, loving relationships.
We need inner strength to keep from being overwhelmed by outward circumstances. We must allow God to gather up our fragmented dreams and remold us into the image of Christ. To do that, He may have to crush the few pieces we have left into fine clay, water us with His Word, reshape our lumpy mass of leftovers, and put us back on His potter's wheel. But He is more than capable of designing something miraculous from whatever we have left to give Him.
